Matter is more or less anything that has mass and occupies a space.  Matter is made up of atoms, which are the smallest particle of an object that still makes it have the same make up.  When an object is made up of just one type of atom, it is called an element.  When several elements make up an object, it is called a compound.  These rocks are compounds, made up of many different types of elements.

This picture also demonstrate a mixture, in that the rocks are scattered in with dirt and sand.  If I took the time, I could separate the dirt, the sand, and the rocks and place them on separate piles.

Kool-Aid is a solution.  A solution is like a mixture, in that it is many things mixed in with one another.  Unlike a mixture, however, the components of a solution cannot be separated out again.  In a solution, they blend together and experience chemical changes, which make them form a new substance together.  In this case, the sugar, Kool-Aid powder, and the water mix in with one another and form a new substance.  Their chemical properties are changed and they are now all Kool-Aid molecules.
